Why Trees?

I

useful items

        a study must

    be made

         of useful items

     of the past

      present

           and

                future

the Chippendales

the furniture

of Hepplewhite

the early

English

and the American

copiers

the religiosity of

the shakers and

the simplistic style

wood

                 from trees

         oak

                  sycamore

                       pine  smooth

             planed

             sanded

             stained

                   and shaped

                   long before

                                              the age of steel

                              ships carrying

                              rum

                              slaves

                              the middle passage

                              the pain sufferings

                              and screams of

                              proud African

                              people being stolen

                              and suffocated

                                 on narrow

                                       decks

                              the gold of capital

                              was

                              being formed

                              the  foundations

                                  of empire being

                                     laid

                                  the foundations

                                     of empire

                                        being

                                             made

II

                                Buildings

must be built

plantation houses

                                in the south

                                the wharfs in

                                Philadelphia

                                on the river

                                the row houses

                                churches and

                                meeting houses

                                of the Quakers

                                in Penn’s new town

                                Trees are consumed

                                and few cared

                                about ecological

                                destruction

                                as i gaze

                                at the wooded

                                doors in my apartment

                                the doors in every

                                apartment

the doors in my

                                  life that open

                                  silently

                                  admitting new

                                  avenues

                                  and visions

                                  upon my

                                  weary

                                  eyes

The British navy

                United States navy

       French navy

Spanish

                galleons

the battle ships

          of the past

whose thunderous

  cannons brought

colonialism

and

                    subjugation

                     to the world

how many

  birches

pines

ashes

           are required

to assemble

     and mend

       them

IV

we and the living plants

    themselves

must not

         forget the fruit

     both strange

                                       and real

     that adorned

       your branches

We Will Make It To Mars Despite the Heineken

Despite the liquor

i thought

as the bottle of beer

cascaded

off my legs

on a bus

on my way to

the gym

to shrink my gut

to decrease the

risk of cancer

the pictures of

Mars reminded

me of the red

clay of Georgian

soil

i thought of

contrasting colors

how marvelous

the landscape  will look

the translucent

domes of resin

filled with

row upon row of

trees.

filling the world

and humanity

with oxygen

the beauty of the

land mixed with

the green astronauts

of Earth

planted  in the rich

red soil of

Mars

Life continues

      no matter what

They Will Probably Follow Us

to the moon

she looked with reverence

at the boxes of

topsoil

stuff to be mixed

with the whitish grey soil

of the moon

they tried it

on Earth

the Sycamores

and Maples

grew well in it

now

all that remained

was to

unload

the topsoil

and the

thousand  small trees

most of

were no

taller

than

    her

Sycamore

the brown tall

statuesque

the one that seems to

grow everywhere

and everyplace

your land is beautiful

and great

your empire stretches

from Pennsylvania in

the east to Georgia

in the south stretching

forth its hand

to kiss the great

Mississippi River

the boundary in the

west your power

giving way

to the arms of the

great plains

its fields of wheat

and corn

O brown champion

of love and life

you stand before

us all

O Sycamore

where are you

your bark felt

so good between

my small fingers

every eight year

old has felt its

tantalizing brittleness

your brown bark

your luscious greenish

brown skin

with bits of yellow

exposed to the sun

the tall branches

whose flesh is so

desired

can tell so many

tales

of

redcoat victory

at the battle of

Germantown

of blue and white

coats victories

at Yorktown

perhaps General Rochambeau

rested his back upon

you

surely General Washington

measured you

certainly, Solomon Northup

used his arms

in labor

upon you

O Sycamore

the true westerner

Platanus Occidentalis

you reside among

us

you are our true

backbone

without you

we cannot stand

O Sycamore

wide enough to

live in the hallow

large enough

to walk around

to take some

time in measuring

3ft for some

5ft for others

10, 20 or more

in diameter.

wood for the plenty

furniture

chopping blocks

for meat and poultry

the things we live upon

the things we need.

reforesting

replanting

the need for both humanity and plant

and the oxygen

we breathe

you fill the blue

sky with the substance

of life and love

you fill the blue

sky with hope

and desire

Paper Birch

Can you see the

whiteness of the

bark

the grey gashes resembling

pencil marks

the decoration of

nature’s own hand

better than any

skilled artist

and you drink  the

sweet wine of design

your weary eyes

rest upon its beauty

the branches split

and become the

trunk

a tree

that resides in the north

of North America

Betula papyifera

the scientists call

      you

it does not

matter the sunlight

kisses the green

of  your

pear shaped

sharp toothed

serrated leaves

i weep for the

treasure

you are

and the freedom

you possess

no one will

ever discriminate

against

you for the color

of your skin

let the sheets

of paper peel

off your skin

thick reams of

bark resembling

newspapers

with lines of

pink within

Oak

Quercus

five species

we know

for here

in

North America

above the cool

waters of the

Caribbean

white oak – Quercus alba

chestnut oak – Quercus montana

red oak – Quercus rubra

willow oak – Quercus phellos

water oak-Quercus nigra

i saw your

  leaf

    delicately

    dancing in

    the wind

the deep dark

    green

seemed

its strength

in the sun

the acorns

   the seeds

       of

   your beauty

  adorn you

remove tannins

never eat acorns raw

for even a plant has a right to self defense

boil

soak

properly

prepare

and

feast

Lilium Sunny Keys

what do you

       do with

      grape juice

the pungent

    color

    in the summer

          heat increases

                                                                          your thirst

 you long for

a grape ice

                                                                           pop

                                                                          water ice

         or the snow cone

                                                                            ice

drenched in

syrup
