Gingko Tree

1

i took a leaf

from a tree

plucked it carefully

in Rittenhouse Square before

a protest march

before eyes, slightly accusing eyes

of two Palestinian Muslims

i must remember people are sensitive

about preserving flora life

it was a leaf from the gingko

tree

each leaf resembles a green fan

i stuffed it in my pocket

like a thief

not to be noticed

not that pruning is a

crime

but with over 6 billion pairs

of hands pruning must be done

with care

i examined the little ridges in

the leaves

the small pipe like veins that

push nutrients and water

through it

primitive photosynthesis

Chinese tree it should be

called because of its origin

not that any tree can

be given a nationality

or human designation

aerial roots and bug resistant wood

branches that are thick and strong and

grow almost everywhere

eradicate nature can

be aesthetic

You live long they say

some have been around for

2500 years or more

Chasing Butterflies in the Park

they held the 2021

flower show in FDR park

it was beautiful the sun was out that day

it was Monday

i made it a point to attend i squeezed $60 out of my budget

retired on a fixed income. everyday you sit and pray

the small savings is not

ripped off. The pandemic made a bad crime situation even worse i was afraid it was hard to come out the house but i was determined

i had both of my vaccine shots the VA used Pfizer/ Bio Tech

i decided the material had sat in my system for three months

i decided to use the flower show to

test its effectiveness

i wore my mask

but the open air

the floral green the brisk wind

the warm sunlight

the clean fresh air

aided the chemicals in the vaccine and my body overcame whatever coronavirus that still hung in the air

they gave us a q-tab stick

it had food on it

to catch the butterfly

you see the butterflies were in the joint

they built this place to prevent their escape

one monarch landed on the q-tab it sat on the cotton until i offered it a better seat on a pistil

we appreciate each other

kept each other company

ended our short visit

he understood the need to be free

and as they checked my person to insure

the butterfly would not escape

he/she or it and i both know

if he/she or it could get past the plastic chains

into the open air filled with flowers grass and trees

the butterfly would be free

no net would find that monarch

no human will entrap the colorful one again

Ash

      1

pear shaped leaves

in a single group

5 to 7 in a bunch

the bark of the tree

resembles the maple

except the color

reminds you of

a cigarette freshly

put out

we examine

your sturdy stance

and the  seed bunches

held in a cluster

as if you are about

to reward the world

with a gift

     2

Fraxinus

the family name

of a sweet

flower whose

olive

relative have

filled our

guts

much as the

lilacs

have nourished

our souls

   3

young tree bark

black smooth and

lean

as if the wrinkles

and defined ridges

of life have not

yet formed

the long journey

of 250 years

it is longer than the life

of the country

   i live in

probably

  wiser too

they say you

         come from Europe

did they bring you

    over

on the ships too?

or are you a real Pennsylvanian

or a native North  American

good for

hammer handles

furniture

baseball bats

arrows and bows

perhaps the stocks of rifles

useful and beloved

    4

i remember you

 from my youth

the seed pods

  that were so familiar

the seeds in the

middle of

two attached

propellers

when it fell from

the tree

   it helicoptered

spun its way down

until it safely

landed upon

   the ground
